Getting To Know The Minor Parties: Aus Sex Party and Family First

I’m staggered at the disenchantment of so many Australians to the two major political parties as we head in to the last 10 days of the election campaign.

For instance, Libby has received her postal voting forms and was stunned at the range of alternative parties. It’s an easy way to vent your frustrations by putting that “1” at the top of a minor party but do you know what they stand for. The names sound familiar but their actual policies may surprise.

This is of course a two horse race: Labor and Liberal. But it’s important to know who the other players are, what they stand for and how they affect the whole system.

This week we're diving into the other parties to get an better idea of who they are and what they believe in. Today we've got the Australian Sex Party and the Family First Party.

Australian Sex Party

The Australian Sex Party have a controversial name, and you might think they’re all about free porn and nudist beaches, but their political stance goes a lot further than 60s style sexual revolution. They bring liberal ideals to individuals by advocating for greater freedom of choice, and for limiting government intervention in personal freedoms.

What they believe in:

• Less government intervention in personal matters

• Equality in sexual orientation and gender, same-sex marriage

• An internet filter is a restriction of our right to free information

• Limiting religion within government

• A national sexual education curriculum

• Allow for legal and guilt-free abortion laws

• Ending tax exempt status for religions

In a nutshell:

Taking leftist, liberal ideology into another separate realm of politics. Centered around issues relating to but not limited to sex. Arch enemy of the Family First party.

Family First

The Family First Party is an ultra-conservative group focused on protecting families; their ability to make ends meet, their ability to grow in a protected social environment which harbors traditional values and morals.

What they believe in:

• Pro censorship, pro internet filter and anti- anything controversial or offensive being publicly visible

• Pro-life in every way i.e they oppose abortion and very anti-euthanasia

• Oppose same-sex parenting, marriage or civil union, as well as altruistic surrogacy

• Zero tolerance of drugs and harm minimization strategies

• More compassionate approach to asylum seekers and quicker processing

In a nutshell:

Although they won’t go around shouting it, they’re a heavily religious party focused on ridding society of raunchy things and protecting the family unit. Arch enemy of the Australian Sex Party.

I agree Brodie. I don't feel like I want any of them in - they all have good and bad points. But I guess we can't be 100% happy as they have so many people to try and please.

thanks Kochie, just what I needed... i feel so said that there is nobody out there that I feel like i want to actually vote for, that i want running our country... this is a sad time for Australia. When we have so much freedom, and not able to use it.

The Australian Sex Party is not leftist, it is libertarian.

Check out this wikipedia article, particularly the Nolan diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian.

Australia needs more libertarian political parties.
