Remember July 30, iPhone 4 Day!!

Last night was bloody cold. And there are very few things which could have kept me out of bed, let alone camping on a city street waiting for a shop to open. But that’s what was happening around the country last night.

It’s official, iPhone 4 is here. They went on sale at midnight last night and I imagine it was a nerdier version of those shoe sales which turn grown women into frenzied savages. Even Masterchefs were out there cooking for the needy (and we’re not talking homeless).

New Apple Friend Bar Gives Customers Someone To Talk At About Mac Products

But I’ve got to say I’m pretty excited.

I just love Apple stuff. I’m one of those people who can’t live without their iPhone. On iPad launch day I was there, sucked in by the newest addition to the sexy Apple family. When my daughter Georgie pulls out her Blackberry, I just look on with pity and disgust.

I’m the person they’re taking the p*#s out of in this video: The Apple Friend Bar.

I know I’m one of those Apple nobs. But it doesn’t matter, because when you love something (or someone) you don’t care what anyone else thinks.

It’s been a long love affair. When I was running my little publishing company Australian Financial Press back in the late 80s, we were the first company in Australia to publish using full screen make-up on a Mac using Quark-Xpress. Since then our household has been through so many different iMac versions we could set up a museum.

I know there are still skeptics who are too proud to give in to the Apple phenomenon. I just don’t understand them. Why am I such a fan?

The kids tell me I’m not the most tech savvy guy, but I like to think I’m learning. Even so, I can sync all my things together so easily – laptop, phone, iPad. And in the end, they’re just great fun. My iPad has the Wall St Journal, the Australian and The Economist applications, and it has the Shrek 3 interactive e-book, Toy Story 3 e-book, and Matilda’s favourite – Larry the Lizard. My 2 year old granddaughter can already navigate her way around my iPhone and iPad.

What gets me is they’re not just building IT gadgets. They’re designers. They make beautiful products (inside and out) which are easy for old blokes like me to enjoy.

In recent years Apple has been dedicated to conquering the consumer electronics industry. Very successfully. Well now they’re looking at expanding to target small businesses. Microsoft still dominates the corporate world; the only Macs you’d see in offices would be in niche design companies. Not for long I suspect.

The iPhone 4 has had a bit of a hard time with its antenna problem, but in true Apple style they just find a logical way around it.

The question now is, do I splash out and get one?

Or maybe the real question is, will there be any left?

Ok, gotta run…

Kochie, for such an apple fan it is pretty disappointing that you were MIA last night for the luanch. Getting one today seems like a no-brainer. Heck, my boss finished work last night and drive the 750km to the sunshine coast from blackwater to be there, 3 hours in a queue and then straight back home. But buying the lastest apple gear can always be dangerous. As its hard to ever go back.
